Positive: I booked El Puente Hotel because it seemed like a great deal: you’re just 10 minutes from the beach while being immersed in the famous mangrove forest of El Paredón. Also, the free rent of Kayak to wonder in the area looked very attractive. Itamar is a great host, very chatty and he seems genuinely interested in getting to know his guests. When I made my booking, I accidentally reserved for one person instead of two, but he kindly agreed to not charge any extra cost, which I really appreciated.

Negative: However, I struggled to understand how this place is rated so highly on Booking. The room itself did not meet expectations, especially for the price paid. It was extremely small, even for a solo traveler, with no real space to store luggage or backpacks (even on the floor!). There was also a strong smell of mold, which made it uncomfortable to stay inside and even made me feel nauseous at times. The air conditioning/dehumidifier was very cold and difficult to adjust, and keeping the door open wasn’t really an option due to mosquitoes and noise (particularly when Itamar was spending time with friends in the evening). There was apparently an option to add breakfast for an extra cost, but this was never offered to us, which was a shame as it would have been very convenient. Overall, El Puente did not feel particularly well maintained, including the swimming pool area. Perhaps we were just unlucky with our room, as it was facing directly onto the forest and maybe upgrading to a different room would have improved the experience (however, this option was not offered). This stay unfortunately put me off staying longer in El Paredón; in fact, I ended up bringing forward my return bus to Antigua.
