The area of Apokoronas extends from the foothills of Lefka Ori north to the beach, with several gulfs, such the gulf of Almyros and Georgioupolis.Kournas Lake, 3 km from Georgioupolis, is the southern lake of whole Europe. It is created thanks to the underground water coming down from Lefka Ori and is trapped by the impervious rocks within the natural basin.Lake Kournas was known in antiquity as Lake Koressia. Its current name comes from the Arabic language and means bathtub and lake. The lake's dark waters impress not only the visitors but also the natives, thus there is the belief that it is bottomless.
